Fahrenheit 451 Analysis

10. Follow Montag's ideological progression. Where does it truly begin and what are the most important instances that spur its growth? Use specific examples from the text in your argument.

I think that Montag's ideological progression truly begins when he meets Clarisse. Clarisse makes Montag really think about things he hadn't considered in a while, like there being "dew on the grass in the morning," or there being "a man in the moon." (pg. 9) Without Clarisse, Montag might not have begun questioning, noticing, and truly considering things, like how "he was not happy". (pg. 12) As the story moved on, I think that when Montag was sent to burn the books at a woman's house, and the woman who was still there made Montag think. Montag hadn't previously considered his work as hurting people, he just saw it as "hurting only things" before. (pg 36) Also, while at the womans house, Montag's hand "had turned thief" and he took a book. (pg 37) After those instances, Montag begins to question things more and more, like when he asked Mildred when was "the first time we ever met?" (pg 43)

TU Tuesday- Local

The article I read was all about antiques that are reproduced and about "identifying fake antiques". Bill Johns, the owner of an antique center says that when something becomes popular " people will find a way to reproduce it". He says that skepticism is needed to help tell a fake from the real thing and that "most of the evidence of something being counterfeit is right in front of you". Some items that are commonly reproduced are made of cast iron because "the heavy metal is valued for its durability and old-fashioned qualities that make it attractive for home decor".

50.Should women be allowed in the military?

I think that women should be allowed in the military for a few reasons. Women should be able to defend the country they live in. I mean, men can, so why not women. Women can be just as brave as men, and just as fierce. Women may not always be as physically strong as men, but that doesn't mean they shouldn't be allowed in the military.

What is Crippling us?

In John Taylor Gatto's article he argues that both the teachers and students are the cause of the boredom students feel. He says that the actual purpose of school is to "establish fixed habits of reaction to authority", "make children as alike as possible", "determine each student's proper social role", "children are to be sorted by role and trained only so far as their destination in the social machine merits", to choose the best students and have them accept "lesser" students as unfit, and to have a small group of those students trained to manage the "continuing project." In Ray Bradbury's book, he talks about how the majority of the people are the same in the way that they ask how instead of why. In the book he talks aout how the children there "kill each other" how it's because "they believed in responsibility" but do not anymore (pg. 30).

All I see is white. The whiteness surrounds me and holds me tight, making me gasp for air. And then, suddenly, light. I see a clear, blue sky. I sigh with relief and quickly glance around. I see a table with cute little party hats everywhere, with placemats set down for where people will sit. This all seems so familiar to me, but the words to come to me until I see the cake. Birthday party. I've heard about this; Horror stories were told about what happened once you left the comfort of the store. I never believed it, any of it. I should have believed. I'm hanging from a tree now, up high enough to view the first of the guests walk through the gate, high enough to see that my end is near.

TU Tuesday - Commencement Speech

I think that when someone is giving a commencement speech that they should try to make it sound like themselves and not like other people. I think commencement speechs should be entertaining and possibly contain humor, like in James Franco's when he said " Looking up on stage, at a man with deep brown eyes, a flawless head of hair, chiseled good looks, staring right back at you. And I'm just talking about Arlington U president James D. Spaniolo!!!," or when he said "If I'm being completely honest, I'm already starting to get a contact high off it." I think that humor can be a great way to gain and keep people's attention. I also like it when the person can relate, like when James Franco talked about how he thought that there was "no better feeling than the sense of accomplishment that comes with graduating,"
or when he talked about how he has a "BA, a few Masters, and (is) currently pursuing a PhD." I also think that it's important when the people talking give advice, like when Conan said "So, that's what I wish for all of you: the bad as well as the good. Fall down, make a mess, break something occasionally. And remember that the story is never over."

10 Somebody Has to Say It

I think that everyone should have a friend that is honest with them and tell them what no one else will. There has to be someone there to fill you in on something and be honest with you, or else you might never learn the truth about something. I think an honest friend is important, since, without them, no one else might give you constructive criticism on a piece of work, or tell you if you actually look good or not.

Tastes like rain,
Smells like fresh dew.
Feels smooth as silk,
Sliding through your fingers.

Cool as ice,

Liberalism

Liberalism is a "political philosophy based on belief in progress (and), the essential goodness of the human race." The first use of liberalism was in 1819. "Liberalism typically believe that goverment is necessary to protect individuals from being harmed by others; but they also recognize that government itself can pose a threat to liberty." Laws, judges and police are a needed thing to keep the person's life and liberty safe, but those things can also be turned against the person.

TU Tuesday- Classified

Gone
 Tuesday, April 10
I wrap my sweatshirt around my body tightly as I shiver, the stapler in my hand wobbling slightly as I pin up the posters. They read as: Lost pitbull. She's "white and brown, about 100 lbs." She's very friendly and gentle. "Last seen in the back of someone's car near Ontario in Albany." The cold air caresses my back and slithers down my spine, creating chills wherever it reaches. I look back up at the poster, at the picture of my baby, my best friend, my Sunny, and sigh. Who would steal a dog from someone? What's the point? Why not adopt one instead? I shake my head in anger. Who would take her from me?

Thursday, April 26
No sign of her yet or any calls. My hope of finding her is fading fast...

Y=Yellow Cake

  • 1 cup butter: I remember mashing and mushing up butter in a bowl to help my mom bake and cook. I wasn't very patient so I never waited for the butter to melt completely, if it was supposed to. I remember adding in the butter to the other cake ingredients and slowly sturring it in until the dough was too thick for me to stir.
  • 1 1/2 cups white sugar:  Sugar. Sweet, and slightly cold to the touch. I remember when I was younger I used to sneak into the kitchen when I thought no one was looking and steal a spoonful of sugar. It was sweet (of course) and had a grainy texture that slowly went away as it began to melt in my mouth.
  • 8 egg yolks: I remember when I cracked my first egg. I was nervous because I was afraid that I'd get the goo of the egg everywhere, and that my mom would be mad at me if I messed it up. I eventually began cracking the egg; It took a few tries to break it open, since I was cracking in gingerly. Eventually, though, I finally craced the egg and was able to dump it into the mixing boul without making a mess.
  • 3/4 cup milk: Cold, creamy. Slides down smooth on a hot day. Chocolate milk was my favorite drink when I was younger. I remember how every morning I'd wake up and eat a bowl of cereal with some ice cold milk.
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons vanilla extract: I used too and still do love vanilla extract. I remember I was baking cookies with my friend and we needed to add vanilla extract. We both wondered what  it tasted like so we both tried a little and it tasted really strong, but kinda good.
  • 2 cups cake flour: When I was younger I thought flour must taste good because it looked like powder sugar and was soft to the touch. One day I decided to try it and I shoved a spoonful of it in my mouth. It was discusting. The taste was hard toget out of my mouth.
  • 2 teaspoons baking powder: When I was little my mom used to babysit the neighbors kids. One day, we were baking (I don't remember what), and the boy my mom was babysitting asked what baking powder tasted like. My mom said it tasted bad, but he asked if he could try it. My mom told him he could but that she warned him. He took a spoon and put some in his mouth. His lips then kind of puckered and he spit it out in the sink.
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt: I used to love salty snacks. When I ate pretzels, I would sort them from least salty to saltiest, and then eat the least salty first so that I would have the saltiest for last.

Famous Poem Starters

Out of the night that covers me,
Black as the pit from pole to pole,
I run,
Trying to escape the madness that follows me.

Out of the night that covers me,
I see the ghosts,
Creatures that feed on hopelessness,
And reflect back failed dreams.

Nursery Rhymes ARE Relevant to Life

          What did I dream?

I do not know;
The fragments fly like chaff.
Yet strange my mind
Was tickled so,
I cannot help but laugh.
Link: http://www-personal.umich.edu/~pfa/dreamhouse/nursery/rhymes/dream.html

This poem made me think about when I dream at night. I rarely remember my dreams, and if I do I usually remember just bits and pieces of them. This poem relates to me because after I wake up I often wonder what my dream was. I try to piece together the fragments I have to get an idea of what my dream was about, but all that does is creates a jumbled mess.

Chuck Miller

The journalist I chose was Chuck Miller. Chuck Miller is a writer as well  as a photographer and was born in Massachussetts. He grew up in New York though and says that "technically,
Albany’s (his) home town." He started writing in 1990, and has written in magazines and newspapers, and has also written books. His photographs have won some awards too. He attended the Street Academy of Albany, which was "formed in 1969 by Sister Maryellen Harmon, RSCJ, as part of an attempt to provide a high school education for troubled youth in Albany’s inner-city neighborhoods." He also plays competitive trivia and has written books on record collecting and photography.

In the article, it talks about how a singer named Freddy Cannon "made over 100 appearances on Dick Clark’s American Bandstand, more than any other performer in the show’s history." Dick Clark helped Freddy Cannon by suggesting to him that "if the record had a fast bass drum in the song bridges, the record would sail up the charts." Freddy Cannon had the bass drum sound recorded and added into the record. When the song “Tallahassee Lassie” got released, it became a hit, and Dick Clark also used it on American Bandstand.

A Heroine

A warrior,
 Complex, contradictory, demanding.
She is an individual,
 Standing alone in the mist.
 A warrior,
 Unique and righteous.
 She defends the free
 Fights for life, home, love
 A warrior,
 Loyal, determined, watchful.
Intent to embrace her identity.
A rare heroine.

When I'm frustrated...

When I'm frustrated I go down in my room for a while to be by myself, and to cool off. I'll usually put my ipod on my ihome, and put on some music. I turn it up really loud so that I can't hear anything else that is going on around me, except for the song that is playing. The music I play when I'm angry is usually by the Foo Fighters, Papa Roach, Three Days Grace, Good Charlotte, the Fray, OneRepublic, and others also.

A= Arby's

(I've never been to a restaurant that starts with y, or z, so I went on to a.)
My restaurant that I chose is the Arby's restaurant. Since it's a fast-food restaurant, there's no waiters that come and take your order, but whenever I go the lines never seem to be too long, and they move relatively quick. When you order the food, it takes a little while for them to get it too you, but i think it's worth the wait, since their roast beef sandwiches are delicious. They also have really good curly fries.

The Book that Changed My Life.

My favorite book is called The Host, by Stephanie Meyers. The first time I read it was over summer last year, before school started. This book is my favorite book because the idea really interested me. I liked how it showed a different take on the stereotypical view of aliens, and since I'm into sci-fi, I also liked this book a lot. I also liked how both of the two main characters were very likeable, even though they didn't seem to like each other for a good portion of the book.

Bucket List

1) Skydiving- I'd like to go skydiving before I die because, even though I'm not fond of heights, it seems very exciting.
2) Scuba diving- I'd like to go scuba diving and be able to see an underwater reef, because I've seen pictures and they all look really beautiful.
3) Wind surfing-Wind surfing looks really fun to me, and it seems a bit like surfing in the water without the water, which I like because I don't think surfing is for me.
4) Race a go-kart- Go-karts look really exciting to me, and my friend who rides one told me they are fun to drive and race in.
5) Go to a foreign country- I'd love to be able to visit a place like Italy, or France, because I think they seem like beautiful places.
6) Save someone's life- I'd like to be able to save the life of something, like an animal, so that I can help it out.
7) Go on a safari- I'd love to go on a safari to see all the amazing animals in africa.
8) Swim with dolphins- I've always wanted to swim with them, and they seem very sweet and beautiful.
9) Survive a loss- I'd like to do that so that I can understand how to cope with it better, and I'd be able to help others through tough times too.
10) Get an pet that's not considered "standard"- I'd like to get something like a chinchilla or hedgehog, because I think it'd be a new experience to look after one of them.

The Language of Song

http://lyricstranslate.com/en/jueves-thursday.html-0

"Come on, come on. Just do it. Just say 'hi', start a conversation, smile at him, anything... What am I thinking? He sits in front of me every day and hasn't even glanced at me once. Maybe I'm not pretty enough... Maybe it's my hair, or the fact that i'll make a fool of myself that's keeping me from talking to him. Maybe it's because I'm not interesting enough, not original enough, not as fashinable or confident enough, that's keeping me from talking to him... Does he know this is my best skirt, my favorite heels, my nicest top? Does he even notice me? No, if he noticed me he'd be looking at me right now. Does he know how much I notice him? Does he know how much it hurts me to see him not even glance my way... Wait... Is he? Yes, he is! He's looking my way...Oh... He looked away. He doesn't know how I feel... He wouldn't care if  I told him..."

Lucky Blog

I have this small heart necklace that is silver with little gems that are different colors going around the shape of the heart. The gems only outline about half of the heart. The other half of the heart is just silver. The necklace is my favorite necklace because my grandma bought it for me and because I like the way the light bounces off the silver and makes it seem like it's sparkling.

TU Tuesday - CRIME

http://criminal.findlaw.com/criminal-charges/second-degree-murder-definition.html

http://legal-dictionary.thefreedictionary.com/first+degree+murder
In the article it talks about how a lincoln man killed his girlfriend and "pleaded no contest to second-degree murder." That made me wonder what second-degree murder specifically is, and how it's different from first degree murder. I found out that second-degree murder is " an intentional killing that is not premeditated or planned, nor committed in a reasonable 'heat of passion'." I also found out that first degree murder is when a murder occurs and it was "deliberate and premeditated." The difference between the two is that second degree murder has no premeditated part.

I see two stick figures in the picture, one with its  head on the ground in front of it. To me the picture looks like the person has lost their head, in a way, since the head of the stick figure is on the ground.

SCRUPLES

9. You find a wallet containing $300. By the address, you can tell that the owner is wealthy. Do you keep the money?

No, I don't think I'd keep the money, I'd give the wallet back to the person. I wouldn't keep that money, because it seems like a form of stealing to me. I also think that that's a lot of money to keep, and I think if I kept it I'd start to feel guilty for taking the money. Also, what if there's no license or id of any kind, and the person who lost the wallet is the kid of a wealthy person. They would probably think more about losing 300 dollars than their parents, and would probably try to look for it, which would be bad if I kept the money, because it's basically stealing.

My Blog Idea

You have one chance to travel in time (forward or backward) to any place in the world. Would you travel to the future or past? Where would you go, and why?

If I had the chance to time travel I think I would travel into the future, to a year like 2250, or a time around there. I would travel to the future because I've always found the idea of flying hover-cars and robots, and other things like that very interesting. I would travel to a year like 2250 because I think that would be enough time for new discoveries in technology to be made, and I would want to see if my family line was still existant, and be able to see my relatives from the future, which I think would be really amazing. I think I'd like to see if they've found a cure for all cancers, AIDS, and other diseases. I also think I'd like to see if people were genetically engineered, because scientist now are doing genetic research, and I think it'd be interesting to see how much further the human race has advanced.

Revisions

I like how you talked about your character getting water from the water heaters and how you repeat that "they always forget the water heaters," because I thought it showed that water was a key resource to the character's survival, and that he had to be intelligent enough to remember the water heaters. I also like the idea for the story, because I thought it was different and original because it describes the way he "ransacked the houses." One thing you could add in is how your character looks, because I could picture the empty houses and the sand dunes, but I couldn't clearly picture the character.

W= Eight People to Emulate

1) Will Smith is someone I'd like to emulate because I think he is a very talented actor. He also seems to be down to earth, even though he is famous, which is something I'd want to be able to do if  I was ever famous.
2) Will Farrell is someone I'd like to emulate because he is very funny and doesn't seem to be afraid to take risks with his job. When he was on Saturday Night Live I think he took risks with some of the characters he played, and I think that's admirabler.
3) Wentworth Miller is another person I'd like to emulate because when he was newer to acting he played many roles that were not memorable, but he didn't give up.
4) Christopher Walken is someone I'd like to emulate because he is a very well known and talented actor. He plays many serious roles in movies but also has a sense of humor, which is something I think is cool.
5) Barry Weiss is a bidder on a show called Storage Wars. I think it's awesome that he bids on storage lockers just because he is looking for something to collect. I admire how laid back he is and how he is there for the fun of it.
6) Oprah Winfrey is someone I emulate because she made a name for herself, even though she went through a bad situation in her past.
7) Michael Weatherly Jr. is someone I emulate because he is a very good actor and he is on one of my favorite shows.
8) William Petersen is someone I emulate because he is an actor, but he doesn't seem to be overly sure of himself. I also think it's pretty cool that he is an executive producer as well.

TU TUESDAY- Culture

http://www.timesunion.com/news/article/Argentine-unions-plot-British-cargo-ship-delays-3334002.php

In Argentina the union workers are creating a plan to boycott "container ships carrying British goods," so they can get Brittain to negociate about the Falkland Islands. The poem (below) is related to the article for a few reasons. The British and Argentine "all want the opposite" because they both have different ideas about who should get the Falkland Islands.

ABOUT LOVE FOR BARBARIANS by Luis Benitez

The opposite seeks the opposite
and the drop of black
grows within white
until turning white into black
and conversely the drop becomes white

We all want the opposite
Which incarnates in front of you
Once in a while
And brings its exotic religion its idea of the subject
Its distractions its apparent cruelty
The little care with which it handles the most precious gifts
The offers and presents we devoted
Before
To our own fetich
Such was our donation
Barbarians have the candor of what we were
That which has never grown in them
Or has never been attempted

They are what was possible for us to be today and did not prosper
Therefore the tenderness the zeal the interest we feel
For its apparent clumsiness
A constant lack of consideration

Our consolation when their actions kill us
is contemplating them kindly
And caressing or at least trying to do so

The destroying brutality
that when rebuked
they sincerely do not understand
As they would not understand if in front of them we wept
The why of all those tears they feel innocent
They are indeed, ours is the tragedy of understanding
That we can do nothing
Either for love or for hatred to redeem the creature
From its rude condition

This is of all gifts perhaps the rarest
Our gods have given us
Our non-existing gods

There are also those barbarians who resemble us
But they are not us beware of them above all
They are the most dangerous they are those who really
Reach your heart
With their deceits of which they are of course
Utterly innocent

But nothing changes barbarians

And when their fierceness appears expressing their "meanness"
Their "violence" their "impiety" their fastidious extreme negligence
They are already within us and it is late
Very late for everything
And they will never leave that
Which their unskilfulness their unconscious malice conquered
And also their dexterity
Widely acquired
In combat against other barbarians

We will be their success the drop of childish joy
Which lasts for a day
The lonely boasting which soon disperses
Ours will be the ruins the venerated broken statues
We sold at market price for their sake
Nothing or almost nothing is worth anything from us among barbarians
And ours will be the night where something will burn
Eternally in flames forever
For the love of barbarians

Valentine's Day

Jessie couldn't believe her eyes. Stuffed into her mailbox was the biggest Valentine she had ever seen. She went over to the mailbox and grabbed the colorful red heart card attached to a gigantic heart shaped box of chocolates. "I wonder..." she murmered, and began searching for the name that would tell who the Valentine belonged to, since the card had no name. She found the answer to her question on a tag attached to the ribbon that has been carefully tied around the box to form a neat bow. I lift up the little white tag. Alessandra. I grimace. For a brief moment I had actually allowed myself to think that maybe, just maybe, there was the tiniest chance that this Valentine was for me. But, of course, I was wrong. Same as usual. I'm tempted to take the candy even though it's not mine, but I figure I'll end up with the thought of stealing my sister's Valentine on my conscience, so I grab the box, shove it under my arm, and begin the muddy walk back up my driveway.

Dreams are lined up against the wall

Lost
Dreams are lined up against the wall,
Chains linking them together.
Their faces worn and weathered.
Their eyes dull and drooping.

The pictures that cover their bodies,
Were once bright and colorful with dreams.
But overtime they have faded,
Leaving only shades of grey behind.

They have lost their voice,
They have lost their way,
They have lost their sight,
Of what they once were.

Comic Connection

This is connected to my life in a few different ways. For starters I take art in school, and last year during a few of the classes we had to make a clay box. The comic reminded me of how hard I thought it was to get the clay to shape and form in the way I wanted to, because it's very thick. We also had to make little decorations on the box, along with a top for the box. When I was working on mine, a person near me told me that my box looked good. I thanked them and then I looked at their box, which was covered in tiny details and a lot of pieces of clay they had cut out and put on their box. I thought it was funny how this comic reminded me of that class.

Impress yourself today

I think that the "pep talk" that says "impress yourself today" applies to my life because when I get up and go to school I try to do the best I can do. When I try to do something I think I really do try my hardest so that I sometimes do end up looking back at it and thinking "I can't believe I actually did that." Sometimes when I write a story, I go over it and improve it to make it the best I can make it. When I read that story just to double check everything sometimes I find that I am really impressed with what I wrote. I think I do try to "impress" myself each day, because if I didn't, I wouldn't be trying to do my best since, the best way to try to impress yourself is to try your absolute hardest.

TU TUESDAY

"There have been too many times that I've collapsed in bed and opened a book only to immediately fall asleep still wearing glasses, the book splayed across my chest.": Imagery- The use of description to create pictures.

"'The manuscript is full of phrases which make a scene blaze with life.'": metaphor- comparison of two unlike things without like or as.

"I reread and underlined Fitzgerald's bursting sentences, adding my own notes to margins that were already marked up. " Hyperbole- An exaggeration.

"Words Worth Savoring" is an article by Donna Liquori. The article is mainly about the book "The Great Gatsby" and how she wants to  "read a smaller number (of books), but slower." The figurative language that is in the article helps to describe how  ""Gatsby" is a short book, 182 pages crammed full with some of the most exquisite observations about human character and longing." and how she wants to slow down and read less books because if she was "to tell you the last few books (she's) read (then she's) got to think about it." The figurative language helps to describe the book, and how good the writer thinks it is.

Original Poems III

ACROSTIC POEM

Music
Melodic tunes drifting through your head become the
Ultimate lullaby that
Sometimes seems as though they will go on
Infinitely until you
Calmingly surrender to the song.

MAGICAL POWERS
Invisible

Invisible,
I weaved my way through a room,
Pushing past those in my way,
Because I knew they'd never see me.

I'd whoosh past them all,
And when they'd say "I wonder who did that",
I'd look them in the eye,
And giggle as they shrugged it off.

I used my power to find out secrets and surprises,
Like when my parents were taking me out to eat.
And they never found out,
Because I was invisible.

MEMORY POEM
Flower Girl

It lay on the bed,
a delicate little white dress.
It was beaded and sparkly,
And it whispered my name.

Finally it was time,
To slide the dress on,
And twirl around a bit,
Before it was time to go.

Not long after I had my dress on,
I was told it was time.
So I picked up my basket of flowers,
And walked past rows of people.

I smiled the entire time,
As my hand flung petals in the air and,
As my curled hair bounced near my face.
I don't remember much else from that day except for that I smiled,
From ear to ear.

Original Poems II

LADDER
Little Feet

Pattering,
Of feet,
Echo through rooms,
As cats scurry around.
Their claws click on flooring,
As they play together,
Until tiredness overcomes,
And sleep,
Arrives.

STREAM OF CONSCIOUSNESS
My Thoughts

I'm sitting here typing.
Typing makes a clicking noise when you hit the keys.
Keys for a car make a jingling noise.
Noise is something I try to drown out with music.
Music listening is one of my favorite activities.
Activities are fun to do when you are with your friends.
Friends let me be myself.
Myself is a person who will be true to themselves always.
Always is a very long time.
Time is something there is never enough of.

MUNDANE
The Pencil

It's old and weathered.
The yellow has begun to chip off,
Revealling the wood underneath.

It has been with you through hard times.
That math test you thought you wouldn't make it through.
That 1,000 word essay where you got stuck at the 500 word point.

It travels everywhere with you,
In your backpack or briefcase,
It's waiting to be used.

It remembers it all.
When you got stuck it was there,
Sharpened and ready to go,
The graphite glistening in the light.
