Liberalism is a "political philosophy based on belief in progress (and), the essential goodness of the human race." The first use of liberalism was in 1819. "Liberalism typically believe that goverment is necessary to protect individuals from being harmed by others; but they also recognize that government itself can pose a threat to liberty." Laws, judges and police are a needed thing to keep the person's life and liberty safe, but those things can also be turned against the person.
